Frances, Ivan and Jeanne -- These four hurricanes wreaked
havoc on Florida, the Gulf Coast and the Caribbean, taking
lives, destroying homes and wiping out vacations. In some
instances, insurance companies have also fallen victim to
the storms. Access America, one of the country's leading
travel insurance and assistance providers, isn't one of
them.
"Access America estimates it will pay over $1 million in hurricane-related claims as a result of the storms in August and September," says Beth Godlin, Access America's Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. "Travel agents and their customers trust Access America because we have the stability and the reserves to weather these situations. We are proud to say that these claims will not force a rate increase." Almost all Access America customers affected by the hurricanes have filed claims for trip cancellation, trip interruption and travel delay. Almost half of these hurricane-related claims are associated with losses incurred as a result of Hurricane Frances, which hit Florida during the Labor Day weekend. Travelers should note that hurricane and other weather-related benefits come with some terms and conditions of coverage. For example, the policy must have been purchased before the National Weather Service issued a warning for the affected area. Once a warning is issued, the storm is considered a foreseeable event. "Travelers need to be well-informed about the importance of purchasing coverage before hurricanes appear in the headlines. If you travel to hurricane prone locations during the hurricane season, buy your travel insurance as early as possible," says Godlin. |
